Rudolf Steiner School Kings Langley
From Schoolforge-UK
Background
There are over 30 Rudolf Steiner schools in the UK, all of which follow the educational principles put forward by the Austrian philosopher of the same name. The school in Kings Langley has over 400 pupils: approximately 60 are in the Kindergarten, 120 in the Lower School (to age 14) and 120 in the Upper school (14-19). ICT is neither taught nor used below the Upper School, while Upper School pupils study for GCSE, AS- and A-level exams in addition to completing the Steiner curriculum. However, ICT is not included as a GCSE exam subject.
In 2006, the computer facilities available to staff and pupils consisted of:
- Library - 3 Windows XP PCs connected to the Internet
- ICT Room - 12 PCs of various ages on a 10MHz network, not connected to the net
In addition, the Administration offices used 5 Windows XP PCs connected to the net via a Windows Small Business server running the SIMS management package.
Teaching ICT in this environment was highly demanding, with nearly as much time spent on maintaining the different versions of Windows and Office running on older and mostly donated PCs.
