Open Source for Digital Curation
From Schoolforge-UK
Open Source for Digital Curation is written by the DCC Advisory Services Manager Andrew McHugh.
This is the first instalment of the DCC Digital Curation Manual, which provides guidance for the storage, management and preservation of digital information and is thus applicable to those managing digital learning materials.
The document provides an introduction to the value of Open Source with its core principles of freedom, transparency, longevity and reusability. It highlights the risks of relying on proprietary solutions and formats for the long term storage of digital creations. It includes an overview of the current Open Source landscape including examples and guidelines for planning to use Open Source. Although it has a FE/HE focus there is much of interest to school practitioners.
