Concept

To aid the uptake of FLOSS solutions on the desktop we would:

  • form a consortium of providers
  • agree a set of standards for Managed Services
  • present this to relevant audiences as a viable alternative to proprietary offerings

Advantages

In particular this would:

  • offer reliability to schools who decide to purchase managed FLOSS systems
  • allow sharing of costs on items such as advertising, stands at exhibitions, etc.
  • present coherently to Govenment agencies and departments and other decision makers

Specification

I suggest the specification covers the following areas:

  1. licencing - all software on a consortium system much be licenced under an approved FLOSS scheme
  2. software - list of the required type of software - by application
  3. documentation - all systems must be self documented, so any skilled provider with the necessary passwords could manage the system
  4. reliability - all systems would need a fail-over mode with automatic backup
  5. management - should be delegated to relevant levels - ie systems to allow teachers to reset passwords, stop print runs and control internet access; remote management for updating packages, etc.
  6. gateway - the provision of Internet access, e-mail services and home accessible file storage

Registration of Interest

So far we have had expressions of interest in this scheme FROM the following suppliers:

Meeting

I think it would be extremely helpful to have a meeting of interested parties to discuss Richard's proposals above. I'd be happy to travel to The Learning Machine to have the meeting, or perhaps Spyderworks would be able to host it? We don't have a suitable venue to offer here, unfortunately. I'll be away for the next week, but will send some emails around about this when I return.

Seb James, Hypercube Systems.
