How Project Started:

As one of the strands of the Excellence in Cities (EiC) initiative.

Why use GNU/Linux?

We wanted a flexible solution in ORDER to run thin client stations over a wireless link. We decided that Mandrake Linux and StarOffice 6 offered the functionality we needed, yet was more stabe and less demanding on resources than Microsoft software. We were also concerned at the costs of doing this with a Microsoft solution, and were attracted by the greater flexibility offered by open source.

Project Description

Linux Thin Client network, running Mandrake Linux and StarOffice 6.

Project Evaluation

Improved attainment of host school and local community.

Future Uses

System will deliver content to partner schools as terminal services, using wireless and fibre-optic links.
