Discussion list

From Schoolforge-UK

Jump to: navigation, search

Schoolforge-UK has a discussion list, <discuss@schoolforge.org.uk>, for discussing topics related to implementing FLOSS in schools and colleges. A second list, sf-uk-mias@googlegroups.com, is for discussing MIAS system development.

The lists are hosted by GoogleGroups, where they are known as Schoolforge-UK Discussions and Schoolforge-UK MIAS. They are both "open group", which means that anyone can search the archive of messages via Google without joining the list. You can view the archive of messages discuss here or MIS here.

Only list members may post messages. To join the lists and post to the group, you must register with GoogleGroups and then subscribe to the lists:

  1. Point your web browser at http://www.googlegroups.com, and click 'Sign up now'
  2. Type in your current email address (or the address you want to use) and a password
  3. Complete the rest of the form as directed
  4. Take a moment to read the Terms of Service, then click "I have read and agree... "
  5. A confirmation message will be sent to your email address
  6. When you receive the message from GoogleGroups, click the link to activate your account
  7. Now you can sign in to GoogleGroups with your email address and password
  8. In the Group lookup box type "Schoolforge-UK Discussions" or "Schoolforge-UK MIAS" and click the button
  9. Click 'Join this group' to subscribe. Now you can view the group messages

Take a little time to find your way around the GoogleGroups interface. You only really need to use it to search the archive, but you can also alter settings, for example to receive messages in a daily digest instead of one at a time. Use the interface to unsubscribe when you no longer wish to take part in the list - so don't lose your password.

You post a message to the list by composing it on your desktop like any other email, and sending it to <discuss@schoolforge.org.uk> or <sf-uk-mias@googlegroups.com>. Some time after you send, you should receive a copy, indicating that it has gone out to all the other members of the group.

When replying to messages from the group, use the 'Reply' button to send to the whole list. You must edit the "To" address by hand if you only want the original poster to receive your message.
